I created this site as an online gathering place, for people like me who find ways to commute better. I'm curious what people come up with, to do it better.
I am on the road way too much but last week I was able to ride my bike or carpool 4 of the 5 days. On Friday, I drove to 4 different gas stations looking for the cheapest gas...in North Conway, 7-11 wins at "only" $3.64/gallon as of Sunday.
Talking to Dad this weekend petrol is the equivalent to $10.00 (NZD) a gallon in New Zealand.
You mentioning this made me remember a conversation I had with one of the Frenchmen from Michelin. We talked about commuting and such and when I asked him about the price of gas, he said it was something like $2.50 a liter in France. A rough conversion was $10.00 a gallon (Euro, or whatever their currency is) and he didn't seem all that set back by it. Almost like that is what is expected.
I try to think about how to combine trips, especially if it means driving the truck. Gone are the days of running back and forth into town several times on a Saturday while doing work on the house- make a list and if I forget something then it has to wait- or if it's small then I have yet another excuse to get out for a ride! Eventually I'll own one of these
The sad part is I didn't think to much about a lot of this until I couldn't afford not to!
Luckily, I live close enough to the center of town, that a quick pedal can be easy enough that I can make multiple trips. I have to agree with Sven that the Big Dummy is a great idea. After a little thinking, I have been searching for an old, no longer being used child trailer. I think the bike frame would hold a lot of things, but the child trailer would work a tad better, plus be a little cheaper. I think the fact that it can close up completely appeals to me just in case it rains or I need to take the doggy somewhere quickly.
