How far is your commute?

I've got a number of thoughts running through my head, my office mate- Seth (who started this site) is struggling with the idea of communting 50+ miles round trip on a mountain bike to live up to bike to work week (I don't blame him!) and I'm working on a project that is looking at (among many things) how far people live from work and essential services- soooo my question(s) are How Far Do You Live From:
work:
school (if you have kids or are a student):
essential services:
grocery store:
hospital:
town:

The next question- if you had to move right now would you choose to live closer to those places listed above?

For me: work- 9 miles, school- 2 miles, essential services- between 2 and 10 miles, grocery- 6 miles, hospital- 10 miles, town- 2 (for the town office, but that doesn't really count) 9 for the village in North Conway.

I'll join in on this conversation:

work: If I take the road (on tired legs days or wintery days) - 1.5 miles each way making it 6 miles round trip being I go home for lunch. If I take the dirt, it takes me about 25 minutes each way, so maybe 5-6 miles each direction (how long is it from Sticks and Stones from Town??)

essential services: I can get just about anywhere in town in less than 5 miles as I am lucky enough to be centrally located.

grocery store: Less than 3 miles

hospital: Maybe 3ish miles.

town: Same as my office as it is located in the center of town.

As far as moving, I don't see how it would get me closer to any of these. If I ever do move, it would be for job reasons and I would move where they tell me to (which I don't ever see happening with my current company). I have often thought about if I had to move, if I would still commute as much as I do and I think I would. There would need to be a change of "equipment" to make the longer commute because of carrying more gear.
