How do you commute?

Sven My new commute

Just started my new job at Bridgton Academy. My commute is a 2 minute walk. I just got back from walking home for lunch, it feels good to be parking the car. In fact the truck hasn't moved in three days, and likely won't for a bit yet. Continue

Different Corolla Conversions

http://www.sahkoautot.fi/eng:summary A coworker sent me an article about this program today. It is nothing really new, buying old cars, coverting them to electric or hybrid and then resell them at an elevated price. Not exactly ground breaking. But, they claim that the cost with a late model Corolla bought in bulk can be converted for roughly the price of a brand new vehicle. That is cool. Regrettably, I've never been to Finland, and definitely do not know the car buying process there, but ass… Continue

Different Getting Better

So I'm not riding in as much as I want to, but...it is getting less painful. My last ride in was noticably less painful. Even as little as I'm riding, I feel like I'm starting to crest the hump. Now, I'm in that funny spot. It's still not fun, but it's not as painful. I'm guessing that I have another 2 - 3 weeks before the real progress starts to happen. Ok, so I apologize, this is arguably the most boring post ever, and is damaging the concept of icommutebetter.org. Continue

Different Off the wagon

So now that Bike to Work week is over, I haven't ridden into work since. It's a bit embarrassing and more than a little foolish, since I actually enjoyed riding in. I'm running into two problems with it. The first is purely mental, at 7am I don't have a burning desire to do much of anything that is more than drink coffee. The second, is a bit more reasonable. When my wife is travelling, I have to find a way to carry my bike on my car. She has a small sedan, which is easy, we have a cheap bike ra… Continue

Different Punted

Here I am, day 2. Sven was kind enough to fix my rear tire - I failed to notice before my morning ride yesterday that the rear tire was rubbing against the frame -, which made the ride a bit easier today. The legs & the lungs are a bit easier - although more likely than not, that was because of Sven's fix, nothing more -, but as I got on the bike today my posterior reminded me how long it has been since I rode more than 1 day in a row. Rachael described it best, saying that it feels like yo… Continue

Different Slow Start

So, I FINALLY started biking in. Unfortunately, with the length of my commute, I wasn't comfortable trying the full commute, so I came in from the walmart parking lot across town. Not much was saved, in fact my wife drove the car all the way to the office for herself, so really, nothing was saved. But, you have to start somewhere. I'm hoping that in a few weeks, I'll be at a point where I can be coming from legitimate distances. If I can do the full round trip by mid to late summer, that's a ga… Continue

Different Bike-to-Work Week vs. Laziness

Here I sit, next to Sven, who is reminding me, over and over, that it is in fact Bike to Work week. I keep hearing this, because my bike is currently sitting in the back of my truck 30 miles from where I sit. This is my current problem. I have a daily commute of 50+ miles, roundtrip, and am severely out of shape. These two conditions have made it extremely easy for me to find ways around biking to work. However, my guilt - I built a site about commuting better, but have not really worked to cha… Continue
